Onion Production a Sweet Success for Bland Farms

Georgia Grown member Bland Farms, the world's larger grower, packer and shipper of sweet onions in the country, produces and processes almost one-third of the Vidalia onions marketed in the world. Based in Glennville, Ga., the company produces authentic Vidalia sweet onions on 2,800 acres here in the state, but has grown beyond the borders of Georgia to meet sweet onion demand. Bland Farms now produces and processes sweet onions under the Empire Sweets brand in New York, and distributes sweet onions under the Bland Farms name from operations in Texas, Peru, Mexico and California. The company's embrace of technology innovations across their supply chain have enabled them to grow, harvest, dry, box and ship these sweet onions to wholesalers worldwide, 52 weeks of the year.
"We joined Georgia Grown because we're proud to be a Georgia grower and wanted to support an organization that is looking out for the best interests of all producers in the state," said Greg Smith, marketing communications manager of Bland Farms. "At Bland Farms we recognize the value in the marketing opportunities that Georgia Grown

Vidalia onions contribute more than $16 million to the Georgia economy annually, and Bland Farms contributes to its communities through support of St. Jude Research Hospital, The Raymond D. Bland Scholarship Fund and donates of more than 4,000 lbs. of sweet onions each week to America's Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia. The company also supports the Breast Cancer Research Foundation with an annual in-store promotion each October. To find out more about Bland Farms, visit www.blandfarms.com.

New Fairgrounds Building to Highlight Georgia Grown Products, Businesses

The Georgia Department of Agriculture and the Georgia National Fairgrounds & Agricenter are pleased to announce the opening of the Georgia Grown building during the 2013 Georgia National Fair, October 3-13. The building will feature 20,000 square feet of space dedicated solely to Georgia Grown products, manufacturers and businesses, specifically geared towards agriculture.
The Georgia Grown building will be open all 11 days of the 24th Georgia National Fair from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m. daily (3 p.m. until 10 p.m. on Opening Day). In 2012 more than 445,000 visitors enjoyed the Georgia National Fair and with the addition of the Georgia Grown building, the Georgia National Fair expects that number to rise.

Proceeds from the Georgia Grown building will aid in benefiting Agricultural Youth Scholarships. Exhibitors in the Georgia Grown building will receive exposure to more than 445,000 Fairgoers, a web site listing with a link to company site and a logo listing in all printed brochures. The Georgia National Fair receives visitors from the entire state and beyond, offering a multi-cultural clientele which reflects the diversity of Georgia. Participants are encouraged to secure a spot in the Georgia Grown building as space is limited. For questions on becoming a part of the exciting new Georgia Grown adventure, contact Teresa B. Hawk at 478-988-6483 or thawk@gnfa.com.

Buchanan Farmer Utilizes Paddock Grazing

To Improve Herd Quality and Bottom Line

Many cattle farmers through the years have allowed their cattle to continuously graze a pasture until the ground cover is all but depleted, often necessitating supplemental feeding. Not only is this more costly for the producer, but it also does not provide the maximum nutrition for the herd and reduces pasture quality.
And, although some farmers have utilized rotational grazing--the grazing of one section of pasture while allowing the others to recover--they have not closely managed the process to optimize cattle nutrition and allow pasture regeneration.
However, Joe Griffith of Buchanan, Ga., is one of those producers who is successfully using management intensive rotational grazing, also known as paddock or cell grazing, to improve his cattle herd, maximize forage growth and quality, and ultimately, increase his operation's bottom

Joe Griffith looks over his cattle herd in Buchanan, Ga., before moving them to a new paddock. The pasture is divided into smaller sections (paddocks) using a single strand of electric fence (shown in foreground).

THE MARKET BULLETIN

Advertising Guidelines Bulletin Publishes Every Other Week

All advertisem*nts published in the Market Bulletin must relate to the farming/agricultural industry or be a part thereof; any and all item(s) submitted for sale through the BULLETIN must meet at least one of the following criteria: 1) must be produced by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation, 2) must be made by the advertiser from materials on his/her own farming operation, 3) must be owned and used by the advertiser on his/her own farming operation for a period of at least 90 days prior to offering for sale through the BULLETIN. Businesses, corporations, dealerships or other commercial enterprises are not allowed to place classified advertisem*nts in the MARKET BULLETIN. Commercial is defined as intended for mass market; handling large quantities of product for distribution (i.e., more than normal household or farm quantities); supported by advertisem*nt (I.e., advertisem*nt in publications other than the BULLETIN; listed as "business" in telephone directories or "yellow pages", etc.). Other indicators include, but are not limited to, holding business licenses and holding regulatory licenses/permits/registrations. Georgia residents only may advertise in the Market Bulletin with the following exception: out-of-state residents may advertise only in the Out-of-State Wanted category. The editor has the authority to designate the length of ads and the number of ads that may be placed by a family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Currently, only one (1) notice may be placed by any family unit in any issue of the BULLETIN. Family unit refers to all individuals sharing the same residence, address or telephone number. Ads must be received no later than designated deadline in order to appear in the following issue. Ads submitted via our website will be scheduled automatically for the next available issue. Ads will be published only once each time submitted unless the advertiser specifies on the notice that the ad is to be published more than once. Ads may be published for two (2) consecutive issues. A new notice must be submitted if the advertiser wants the advertisem*nt to continue more than two issues. Note: Some ad categories are published infrequently and are published only once per submission. Please check ad category headings for publication frequency prior to submitting notice. There is a 20-word limit for advertisem*nts except as noted under category headings (special categories that are published only monthly, quarterly or bi-annually, have a 30word limit). Advertiser's name, town, phone number or name and complete address must be included within the word limit. The Market Bulletin reserves the right to edit notices. Most advertisers include a telephone number in their ads, but mailing address may be published in lieu of phone number. However, it is important that advertisers provide a phone number when submitting ads in the event Bulletin ad personnel need to contact them concerning their ads. Advertisers who do not want a telephone number printed in their ads should note this fact when submitting the notice to the Bulletin. Each notice submitted for publication must be in writing; ads cannot be taken by telephone. Notices may be submitted by U.S. mail, facsimile transmission, or via the Internet through the Market Bulletin website.

Notices sent via mail or fax must be legible, on a single sheet of paper separate from any other notice, and be accompanied by the name of the category and the name, mailing and street address (es) and telephone number of the person submitting the same. Send ads to:

Cancellations or corrections called in will be reflected in the next available issue. Note to Internet users: Once an ad is transmitted via the Bulletin website, the ad cannot be deleted or changed by the person submitting the ad. The advertiser must call the Bulletin at the number above to have the ad deleted. A new ad may then be submitted via the website. Items for sale or services offered in any notice must conform to all laws and regulations covering sale and movement of the same. Ads for some categories must meet certain requirements. Advertisers are advised to review requirements under ad categories before submitting their notices. Note: Due to space limitations, all ad guidelines cannot be listed in the Bulletin each week. Equine For Sale
If you have questions regarding ads in this category, call 404-651-9081.
All equine advertised in the Market Bulletin must have had a negative Coggins test within past 12 months. Negative reports are valid for 12 months from the sample date. A copy of this test report must accompany the ad each time it is submitted or the notice will be returned to the advertiser. For this reason, generalized ads (i.e., many horses, varieties to choose from, others, etc.) cannot be accepted. Buyers are urged to request verification of a negative Coggins test before purchasing any equine. Any falsification of Coggins tests can result in fines and/or suspension of advertising privileges in the Market Bulletin. Any person engaged in buying live poultry of any kind for resale, or in selling live poultry of any kind bought for the purpose of resale, must be licensed by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. Possessing such a license does not by itself disqualify an individual from advertising poultry in the Market Bulletin; however, advertisers should note that all livestock (which includes poultry), must have been in possession of the advertiser for a minimum of 90 days or, in the case of chicks, ducklings, etc., must have been raised by the advertiser before offering them for sale in the Market Bulletin. 3 eggs 1 cup milk 1 cup filling (see variations below) 1 cup grated cheese 1 teaspoon salt, pepper and garlic
In a prepared 9 inch pie deep dish plate sprinkle half the cheese, top with other filling ingredients. Beat eggs, milk and seasonings. Pour over filling and top with remaining cheese. Bake at 375 degrees for 35 minutes or until firm.

You can use the cheese of your choice; this particular Quiche was tested with Sharp Cheddar, but Swiss and Mozzarella work well too.
If you have a small amount of leftover meat and vegetables this is a good way to use them up, as long as it equals 1 cup.

Variations: Chicken, onion and Cheddar Ham, broccoli and Swiss Sausage, pepperoni and Mozzarella Ground beef, onion, pepper and Cheddar
All recipes have been tested for accuracy by Georgia Department of Agriculture home economists unless otherwise indicated.
The Market Bulletin has received a number of requests for more "healthy" recipes (low or no sugar, low fat, etc.). Our office receives recipes for cakes, pies and other desserts, but not many for entrees or side dishes utilizing GeorgiaGrown fruits and vegetables. Advertisers of agricultural seed must submit a current state laboratory report (not more than 9 months old) for purity, noxious weeds and germination for each seed lot advertised. A seed lot must be uniform and not exceed 400 50-lb. bags. Laboratory reports will be returned upon request. Any ads for agricultural seed submitted for publication without this documentation will not be published. Licensed seed dealers cannot advertise seed in the Market Bulletin. Certain varieties of seed are protected from propagation unless they are grown as a class of certified seed. For example, wheat seed such as Florida 304, co*ker 9152, co*ker 9835 and soybean seed, such as Prichard and Benning, may not be propagated for sale unless the seed has been grown as a class of certified seed. Propagation of such seed is a violation of the Plant Variety Protection Act and the Federal Seed Act. If you have questions regarding certified seed, call the Market Bulletin office or the Georgia Department of Agriculture Seed Division at (404) 6565584.

Notice
Hispanic and women farmers and ranchers who allege discrimination by the USDA in past decades are reminded they must mail their claim package on or before March 25, 2013.
The claims process offers a voluntary alternative to litigation for each Hispanic or female farmer and rancher who can prove that USDA denied his or her application for loan or loan servicing assistance for discriminatory reasons for certain time periods between 1981 and 2000. As announced in February 2011, the voluntary claims process will make available at least $1.33 billion for cash awards and tax relief payments, plus up to $160 million in farm debt relief, to eligible Hispanic and women farmers and ranchers. There are no filing fees to participate in the program.
Call center representatives can be reached at 1-888-508-4429. Claimants may register for a claims package (by calling the number or visiting the website) or may download the forms from the website. All those interested in learning more or receiving information about the claims process and claims packages are encouraged by USDA to attend meetings in your communities about the claims process and contact the website at any time or call center telephone number Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time. Website: https://www.farmerclaims.gov/; phone: 1-888-508-4429
Independent legal services companies will administer the claims process and adjudicate the claims. Although there are no filing fees to participate and a lawyer is not required to participate in the claims process, persons seeking legal advice may contact a lawyer or other legal services provider.

shearing season and extending through the program year. The 2013 mohair crop is not eligible for MALs or LDPs because mohair provisions were suspended by the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act of 2012 and the Continuing Appropriations Resolution, 2013.
MALs provide producers interim financing at or after harvest to help them meet cash flow needs without having to sell their commodities when market prices are typically at harvest-time lows. A producer who is eligible to obtain a loan, but agrees to forgo the loan, may obtain an LDP if such payments are available.

is approximately $0.59 per hundredweight. The payment rate for October 2012 marketings is approximately $0.02 per hundredweight. The payment rate for November 2012 marketings is zero.
Before the October MILC payment can be issued, dairy farmers must complete a new Average Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) form for 2013. The new form, CCC-933 Average Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) Certification and Consent to Disclosure of Tax Information, must be completed by producers before they can receive payments for a variety of programs administered by FSA and USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service.
Producers may obtain CCC-933 at their local USDA Service Center or online at www.fsa.usda.gov/ccc933. Specific detail about AGI may be found here.
Dairy operations may select a production start month other than October 2012. Producers who want to select a production start month other than October 2012 must visit their local FSA office before Feb. 28, 2013, during the relief period.
FSA will provide producers with information on program requirements, updates and signups as the information becomes available. For more information on MILC, contact a local FSA county office or visit the FSA website at www.fsa.usda.gov.

The Georgia Department of Agriculture (GDA) is pleased to announce the competitive solicitation process to award the 2013 Specialty Crop Block Grant. Buchanan Farmer Utilizes Paddock Grazing

(Continued from Page 1)

line. Griffith, who has been farming for the
past 33 years, began raising chickens in 1980 and prior to that he showed cattle through 4-H. "I built up through that about 20 cows of my own," he said. Griffith then joined with his father and brother to form G Whiz farms in 1980, and as members of the Georgia Club Calf Producers Association, specialized in producing show cattle for 4H and FFA by utilizing breeding methods to maximize genetics and produce a higher quality herd.
The rotational grazing system used by Griffith gives the farmer more control by strategically and systematically rotating cattle to paddocks where the forage growth is at its peak; i.e., is highest in nutrition and easy to digest. "What I'm shooting for is that bigger leaf stem," Griffith said, noting "the top one-third of the plant is where the majority of the plant energy is."
In continuous grazing, cattle are allowed to graze anywhere, often resulting in over grazed and under grazed areas in the pasture. By rotating paddocks and restricting the time and area the cattle graze, there is an even distribution of grazing in each paddock. This results in less wasted forage, which also lowers costs by reducing the need for supplemental hay.
Over the last three years, Griffith has been able to cut down by half each year on the amount of hay he feeds his cattle. During that time he decreased his hay feeding from 500 bales the first year, to 250 the second year, and this year, "if everything goes right," he says, to 100 bales. Also, whereas he was feeding hay for 100 days the first year, the number of days dropped to 45 in year two and is expected to drop to about 21 days this year.
Griffith noted that there also is more even manure distribution by the cattle in a paddock grazing system. "You better utilize the manure," Griffith said. "It helps cut down on your fertilizer--it's extremely expensive." Although he does have manure available from his chicken houses if additional pasture fertilization is needed, Griffith says he is trying to sell most of it, noting that he is not needing to apply as much manure to pastures since he started intensive grazing.

Pastures on the farm are mostly comprised of fescue with some clover. The clover, like other legumes, provides the pasture soil with sufficient nitrogen so commercial fertilizer is not necessary. Also, there is less weed establishment, reducing or eliminating the need for herbicide applications. As a result, there is less nutrient runoff and pastures tend to be more resilient and stable.
Griffith also has changed his breeding program to take advantage of the native grasses on his farm. "I came in and changed my breeding season and moved from a fall to a winter/spring calving season, trying to shift the nutritional needs of the cows to better utilize Mother Nature's grass," he said.
Farmers interested in transitioning to management intensive rotational grazing should be aware they may have some initial costs to provide adequate water sources and fencing for their operation. "Water is one of the biggest issues when you start," Griffith said. "I learned real quick to put in water troughs." Griffith explained that although he had plenty of water in ponds and creeks, the water was not always closely available to his cattle once he established all his paddocks. However, the sources were close enough to feasibly run piping to provide water to

areas where it was needed. "You don't

want the cows having to walk too far to get

to water," he said.

Griffith noted that although there are

fencing costs associated with intensive

grazing operations, most farmers already

have some fences that can be utilized. "Get

your fences and gates fixed so you can

manage your cows," he said. "You can

start from there and it will make a big

difference." According to Griffith, once all

the existing fencing is sound, then cross

fencing the paddocks is much easier and

cost effective using single or possibly

double strand electric fence.

Although he sells some of his cattle to

buyers to finish, Griffith also sells beef for

local processing and consumption. He

raises his cattle naturally using no

hormones or antibiotics and, although the

cattle are raised on grass, he does feed

some grain at the very end of the growth

cycle. However, he continues to work on

his cattle genetics to be able to offer a good

product from feeding grass only. "I think if

I had a buyer/client that wanted grass fed

beef, I could get a product that would work

for them," he said.

Individuals looking for whole, half and

quarter beef packages can order them

through

Griffith's

website:

www.gwhizfarms.com .

After creating a paddock in one of his fescue pastures, Griffith opens the new section for his cows to begin grazing on fresh grass. Griffith notes that, in order to figure how many paddocks are needed in his operation, a producer must determine how much grass is available, how much the cattle eat per day, and how long he is going to leave them in a paddock before rotation.

USDA Extends Ag Census Deadline

Farmers and ranchers across the country are heeding the call to have their voices heard and their farms represented in the 2012 Census of Agriculture, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. With 1.4 million Census forms returned, USDA said it would like to thank everyone for speaking up for their communities, their industry and their future by sending in their Census form.
For those who missed the deadline, USDA reminds producers that their farm is important and needs to be counted. As a result, Census forms are still being accepted.
"Information from the Census of Agriculture helps USDA monitor trends and better understand the needs in agriculture," said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. "Providing industry stakeholders, community leaders, lawmakers and individual farm operators with the most comprehensive and accurate U.S. agricultural reports, we all help ensure

the tools are available to make informed,

sound decisions to protect the future of

American agriculture."

Conducted every five years by USDA's

National Agricultural Statistics Service

(NASS), the Census provides detailed data

covering nearly every facet of U.S.

agriculture. It looks at land use and

ownership, production practices,

expenditures and other factors that affect the

way farmers and ranchers do business. The

deadline for submitting Census forms was

February 4, and many farmers and ranchers

have responded. However, those who did

not respond by the original due date will

receive another copy of the form in the mail

to give them another opportunity.

Farmers and ranchers can return their

forms by mail or online by visiting a secure

website, www.agcensus.usda.gov. Federal

law requires all agricultural producers to

participate in the Census and requires

NASS to keep all individual information

confidential.

Once all applications are submitted to GDA, each one will be carefully reviewed and evaluated by a Review Committee. Compliance and/or noncompliance of previous sub-grantees fulfilling their annual and final reporting requirements of their past grant award agreements is an important evaluation criterion. All GDA-approved projects will then be combined and written as one grant submission to USDA/AMS. Upon approval from USDA, GDA will notify applicants (subgrantees) of their status. No awards to any sub-grantee will be made until a final grant award is made to GDA (grantor) by USDA. Final approval is expected in early September 2013, but is subject to change.
