Find cooling centers and spots for storm victims to pick up free food and water (2024)

We are keeping a running list of hours and locations of cooling and food and water distribution centers. Check back for updates.

HOUSTON — There are several cooling and distribution centers for people to get out of the heat and get supplies after widespread power outages and damage from Thursday night’s severe storms. Below is a list for Sunday.

Anyone without air conditioning or needing relief from the extreme heat can head to one of the centers listed below. Anyone who needs transportation to a designated CIty of Houston cooling center can call 311 to request a free ride.

With high temperatures expected over the weekend, the city is opening these cooling centers across the Houston area on Sunday:

West University Recreation Center

The City of West University Place has opened the Recreation Center at 4210 Bellaire Blvd as a cooling center for West U residents. The center will be open Sunday from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. Residents are welcome to come into the facility to charge their devices and cool down for a few hours at a time.

Please call the Recreation Center, at 713-662-7420, before you and your family plan on arriving to make sure space is available.

The Houston Health Department encouraged everyone to take extra precautions to protect themselves from heat-related illness and death. High-risk groups, such as adults ages 55 and older, children under the age of 4, and people with chronic illness or either overweight or on certain medications should stay inside air-conditioned buildings between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., the hottest part of the day.

To find the nearest cooling center location or an air-conditioned city facility, people can contact 311 or download the app and find an online portal on their website.

Free hot meals

Mercy Chefs is offering free hot meals on Sunday at the Hope City Church. That's at 5300 W. Sam Houston Parkway N. Houston 77041. Lunch is 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Dinner is 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m.
