Parents demand safety changes after car hits child near Edmond elementary school (2024)

COULD BE MADE. THIS IS THE STREET A STUDENT WAS CROSSING TO GO TO SCISSORTAIL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WHEN THEY WERE HIT BY A CAR. NOW, IF YOU LOOK ALL THE WAY DOWN THE STREET HERE, THE WARNING SIGNS THAT THIS IS A SCHOOL ZONE START ALL THE WAY AT THE FRONT. PARENTS SAY THERE NEED TO BE SIGNS CLOSER TO THE SCHOOL TO HELP PROTECT STUDENTS. THERE’S NO STOPLIGHTS, NO STOP SIGNS AT ALL. SO PEOPLE JUST FLY THROUGH HERE. PARENTS AT SCISSORTAIL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SAY THEY WANT MORE WARNING SIGNS TO PROTECT STUDENTS CROSSING A BUSY STREET TO GET TO SCHOOL. THE ONLY WARNINGS THAT YOU HAVE ARE JUST THE REGULAR GENERIC SCHOOL ZONE SIGNS. THERE’S NO FLASHING LIGHTS, NO LIGHTS ON THE GROUND WHILE THE STUDENT WHO WAS HIT BY A CAR EARLIER IN THE WEEK IS OKAY, PARENTS SAY IT COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED WITH MORE SCHOOL ZONE WARNINGS. IT’S DANGEROUS. OBVIOUSLY. NOW, NEARLY 100 PARENTS HAVE SIGNED A PETITION IN HOPES TO ADD THOSE WARNINGS. WE’VE BEEN TOLD THAT THERE WAS NO CAUSE FOR A CROSSWALK. SO NOW WE’VE STARTED TO SEE SOME THINGS HAPPENING BECAUSE THERE’S BEEN A CAUSE. UNFORTUNATELY, EDMOND PUBLIC SCHOOLS TOLD KOCO THEY’RE WORKING WITH THE CITY OF OKLAHOMA CITY TO ADD MORE SAFETY MEASURES. THE CITY SAYS THE STREET IS ALREADY A 25 MILE PER HOUR ZONE AND BY CITY ORDINANCE, THEY CAN ONLY HAVE SIGNS LIKE THIS ONE THAT SAY WHEN CHILDREN ARE PRESENT. NOW, THE CITY PLANS TO ADD PAVEMENT MARKINGS THAT SAY SCHOOL, BUT THEY SAY FOR CROSSWALKS TO BE PUT IN, THE ADDITIONAL CROSSWALK WILL HAVE TO BE SUBMITTED BY THE EDMOND PUBLIC SCHOOLS, AND THEN IT’LL GO TO THE TRAFFIC COMMISSION FOR APPROVAL. AND THEN ONCE THAT THAT IS DONE, THE CITY WILL GO OUT AND STRIPE IT AND PUT THE ADDITIONAL SIGNAGE UP. NOW, THE CITY SAYS FOR A CROSSWALK TO BE PUT IN HERE, IT WOULD HAVE TO BE APPROVED BY THE TRAFFIC COMMISSION. THEY EXPECT THAT TO HAPPEN IN JULY AND HOPE FOR ALL THIS WORK TO BE DONE BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS BACK UP IN AUGUST IN NORTHWEST
